about the trail

How it got started, where it is going & how you can be involved.

The beautiful sound side town of Cape Carteret, North Carolina is home to over 2000 residents. It also serves as a town center for several surrounding communities as they use the commercial and recreation elements within the town. Currently, there is no safe pedestrian trail to connect the residents with the many amenities in the area. With that in mind, the Cape Carteret Board of Commissioners voted unanimously in February 2015 to adopt a multi-use trail project to benefit the citizens of Cape Carteret. This multi-use Cape Carteret Trail will link area neighborhoods, businesses, schools, and public services with a path that accommodates walkers, runners, cyclists of all skill levels and abilities and will be ADA compliant. A combination of private and public funding will be necessary to complete the path by 2018, in accordance with the estimated project timeline. The trail project will afford sponsorship naming opportunities and numerous fundraising events to meet the project expenses. A CC Trail Planning Committee was adopted and the forward momentum began immediately! Cape Carteret- This is a community opportunity to band together in order to make the CC Town Trail project a reality. The CC Trail would beautify our town, promote physical activity, provide a safe place for families to gather, and connect neighbor with neighbor and neighbor with businesses.

Trail location

The Cape Carteret Trail will be a 3.1 mile closed loop trail around our wonderful town. The completed Trail will follow Highway 24, Highway 58 and Taylor Notion Road Corridors. The Trail will utilize existing trail segments (Highway 24 walkway connecting to White Oak Elementary School, and segment around Handi Mart Gas Station). The trail will be an asphalt surface ranging from 8-10 feet wide. The project will include exercise areas, parks, gardens, wooded areas, and benches along the way.
